History

The roots of The Bispol Screw Factory reach back to the eighties of 19th century. The factory was made up of two companies and the name was taken from their first letters of their names:

  • "Bartelmuss & Suchy" (BIS)
  • "Theodore Pollak & Son" (POL)

The first firm "Bartlemuss & Suchy" was founded in 1880. In that factory screws, rivets, washers and accessories for textile industry were produced. The beginning of the 20th century was the time of prosperity. During that period new engine house, hot forger, unloading railway platform and locksmith tools arose. Also new warehouse for raw material and finished goods were built and production was limited only to screws, washers and rivets. In 1938 the company had the warehouse in Warsaw as well as branch offices in Katowice, Krakow, Warsaw and Gdansk, while its capital was estimated for about 4 mln of contemporary polish zloty. The factory had driving machines of 500 hp and employed 550 blue-collar and 70 white-collar employees, whereas the manufactured assortment, apart from screws and rivets, included nails, drawn wire, different kinds of building fittings, locksmith goods, padlocks, mailboxes and so on.

The second company "Theodore & Son" began its activity in the beginning of 1909y in Biała. The assortment produced in the factory included wire goods, drawn wire, nuts, rivets, iron bolts and screws, metal plugs and materials for railway industry. The factory was being driven by machines of total power 350 hp and 180 production staff members, 8 engineers and 14 clerks were employed.

During The World War II, German occupant authorities closed the Pollak's company and the factory together with all its equipment was handled over to "Bartelmuss & Suchy" company. In 1945, the united facilities were taken over by the Polish state management and received the name BISPOL.

According to the chronicles, 1946 - 1960 were the years of setting factory in order. Company consisted of two units: Department A, which was earlier Bartlemuss' factory and Department B, which was the Pollak's old factory. BISPOL immediately started its production, however the following period of time can be characterized by stagnation in development as well as lacks in proper equipment and new machines.

In 1960s development and modernization was started and important investments were made and due to that facts, technical capabilities as well as management, BISPOL become a leading company in screw business in Poland. The achievement was possible thanks to the implementation of an investment program, which resulted in record breaking sale level of 23000 tons of fasteners with 1640 employed people. High technical and quality standards permitted to cooperate with automotive industry.

BISPOL supplied FIAT with the first fasteners to their cars produced in Bielsko-Biała at Fabryka Samochodów Małolitrażowych (FSM). In order to meet technical and quality requirements of the automotive industry it was necessary to broaden the production equipment with new machines allowing for manufacturing of more complicated types of fasteners with the intention to supply Polish automotive industry. Fasteners were delivered mainly to Fabryka Samochodów Osobowych (FSO) in Warsaw, Fabryka Samochodów Rolniczych in Lublin and Fabryka Traktorów URSUS.

Changes in Polish political systems in 1989 and loss of markets in Eastern European countries seriously affected all companies in Poland. The economic crisis at the beginning of the 1990s had the biggest impact on the state-owned companies of heavy industry, including BISPOL Factory. This period was the worst in the history of the company.

Facing the economic changes the governor of the Bielsko-Biała Province on the 1st of February 1992 appointed the Governing Commissioner in BFWŚ BISPOL S.A. and a comprehensive restructurisation of the company started immediately. Restructurisation was carried out on all areas of BISPOL's activities and resulted in the company's transformation into a company of the State Treasury. Two years later BISPOL S.A. was included in the Mass Privatisation Program as a portfolio company of XI national Investment Found (NFI). Thanks to the efforts and engagement of the Supervisory Board of the Company and the Board of Directors of XI NFI, BFWŚ BISPOL S.A. found its strategic investor - BULTEN AB.

As a result of restructurisation, the production was split into two parts: the Automotive Division and the Standard Division, which was sold to Polish investors on the 1st April 2000 with the right to use the name and logo of BISPOL, while the Automotive Division is Bulten's own.

In the year 2004 the most shares of BISPOL were taken-over by ASMET company, one of the biggest producer and distributor of fasteners in Poland. Now The Screw Factory BISPOL S.A. is 100% polish firm with about 100 employees.
